Who We Are
The Sabal Family welcomes you to the Billy Hawk Caye lodge. Operated mainly as a fishing island through its early years, the Sabals have worked to build the island up over the past fifteen (15) years to invite tourism. Billy Hawk Caye as we know it is the only Garifuna cultural island in Belize and possibly in the world; which are yet still true to their roots, this island paradise is conveniently located fourteen (14) miles southeast of the culture capital Dangriga town, and nine (9) miles east of Hopkins village. Alex and his sister Jackie along with their extended family spends a good portion of their years on the island, still fishing when not entertaining guests.
OUR BRANDA proud Garifuna family, the Sabals are excited to share their island, its pristine surrounding reefs, their knowledge, and their herritage with you. At Billy Hawk Caye lodge, the aim is to make your vacation dreams come through. Whether it is a quiet island getaway, or an action packed adventure, our dedicated staff is willing to make these dreams become reality.
Located On The Barrier Reef
Billy Hawk Caye is located on Belize's barrier reef, the second largest of its kind in the world. With its prime location, Billy Hawk Caye offers a number of activities that will allow you to enjoy and appreciate the nature around you.
Included in your visit is also the opportunity to spend time learning to fish as the local Belizeans with hand line. When in season, you can join in the hunt for lobster or conch, learn how to clean your conch and also help Jackie prepare your fresh sea food meal. We can also take a short swim from off the beach of your private island where sits a healthy coral reef great for snorkeling. At the last night of your stay you can join in our cultural night where you can learn how to play our local drums, dance and sing.
For the budding scientists, you can also book a tour of nearby Carrie Bow Caye with advanced notice. Home to the Smithsonian's marine research station, the island managers at Carrie Bow will show you their labs. If you're lucky, you may even get to meet some of the resident scientists and see their research. If you'd prefer relaxation over activity, there are many hammocks for you to choose from, both in the sun and shade. With prime placement for tanning, watching the sunrise, laying by the bar, or napping in the sun, pick one and make yourself at home.
